Middle school is a time of big change for children academically, socially and emotionally. As your child moves through 6th, 7th and 8th grade, their routines and responsibilities shift. Knowing what to expect at each grade level can help you support your child during this stage of their academic journey. Read on to learn about what to expect from the middle school years.
6th Grade: Adjusting to New Routines
The first year of middle school is all about adjustment. Your child will be navigating a new schedule with more class periods, new teachers and new classmates, all while learning how to manage more responsibilities than they had in elementary school. 6th grade is the year to focus on building strong routines, staying organized, starting to practice time management and making new friends. Small bumps along the way are to be expected. You need to be there to offer patience, guidance and encouragement as they find their footing in this new environment.
7th Grade: Discovering Interests and Strengthening Habits
By 7th grade, your child will be settled into the middle school rhythm and have an established friend group. They’ll also likely be ready to start exploring. This is often a year of discovery, as students start to develop clearer interests, whether that’s in a particular subject, sport or creative outlet. It’s also an important time to develop strong study habits that will help them in 8th grade and beyond. While your child is in 7th grade, encourage them to try new clubs and after-school activities, as well as reinforce the organizational and time management skills they began building in 6th grade.
8th Grade: Taking Ownership and Preparing for High School
The final year of middle school begins the shift toward increased ownership and maturity. Students should begin thinking seriously about their academic goals and start researching the classes and pathways available to them in high school. This is a good time for parents to have open conversations about what to expect from the transition ahead, from course selection and new extracurricular opportunities to increased workload and more responsibilities. Standardized tests, End-of-Course (EOC) exams and placement tests are key milestones in 8th grade, so make sure your child understands the importance and has strong study skills to back them up.
The Big Picture
Middle school is a formative period of growth, where students gradually move toward more independence and ownership over their learning. The skills they learn in 6th, 7th and 8th grade will be pivotal to their high school experience. The most important thing to take away is that each student is a unique individual who moves at their own pace. What matters most is that your child has the support, tools and encouragement they need to grow into their own at each stage.
