Tips for Helping Your Child Keep Their Schoolwork Organized

Organization is one of the most valuable skills a student can develop. Like any skill, it has to be taught and practiced. A child who knows where their supplies and papers are, as well as which assignments are due and when, is usually less stressed and more confident walking into class each day. Organization also helps your child avoid the lost homework or forgotten permission slip problem. A few simple systems and intentional steps are all it takes to help your child keep their schoolwork organized. Here are a few tips:

Start with Folders and Binders

Staying organized starts with having the right tools. A binder with dividers for each subject, a color-coded folder system, or “turn in” and “take home” folders give your child’s papers a dedicated place to live. It’s worth checking with your child’s teacher, since many teachers, especially of younger students, have a specific folder system already in place. Sit down with your child and label their binders and folders together, placing each paper and assignment in its appropriate place. This gives them a level of ownership over their schoolwork, which can help motivate them to stay organized.

Use a Planner or Calendar

One of the simplest and most effective tools for staying organized is a planner or a calendar. Writing down assignments and due dates is a strong habit for any child to practice, and giving them a dedicated place to do it makes it more likely that they will. The best part about it is that planners and calendars can be highly personalized, as they come in different sizes, colors and designs. Choosing one your child likes makes it more likely that they’ll enjoy using it. For older children, a digital app is also a great option. Make it a habit to check and update it together every day, so nothing slips through the cracks.

Clean Out Their Backpack Regularly

A clean backpack is usually an organized one. But a backpack that never gets cleaned out quickly becomes a black hole for important papers. A good rule of thumb is to go through backpacks at least once a week. Friday afternoons or Sunday evenings usually work well. Help your child clean out their backpack, tossing anything that’s no longer needed and making sure everything else is in its dedicated place. This 10-minute habit can save you both from a lot of frantic searching later on.

Keep Their Study Space Neat and Tidy

The study space your child uses to do schoolwork and study at home plays an important role in helping them stay organized. A tidy area that’s stocked with all the supplies they need, free from clutter and distractions, not only makes it easier to focus but also to stay organized. Encourage your child to take an extra few minutes at the end of every study session to reset their space and make sure important assignments make it back into the appropriate spot in their backpacks. That way, they’re ready to go for next time and no homework gets left behind.

Create a Consistent Homework Routine

Backpacks, binders and folders aren’t the only organizational tools in your child’s toolkit. Consistency can be quite powerful in helping your child stay organized. Homework and study time should happen around the same time and in the same place each day. Predictable schedules make tracking, planning and completing assignments much easier. It also prevents misplaced assignments or last-minute scrambling.

Building these organizational habits takes time, consistency and mindfulness, but it’s well worth the effort, as staying organized is a skill that will serve your child in school and beyond.
