5 Fun and Educational Halloween-Themed Activities for Kids

Halloween doesn’t just have to be about pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating. There’s plenty of fun to be had and learning to be done during spooky season. Here are five of our favorite Halloween-themed educational activities for kids that you can do right at home, no fancy supplies or expensive outings needed:

1. Pumpkin Science Experiments

Pumpkins are usually saved for carving silly faces or making yummy treats, but they can also become fun science labs. Get three different-sized pumpkins—a small, a medium and a large—and challenge your child to guess how many seeds are inside. Then cut each one open, scoop the seeds out and count them together. Before you start carving, do a sink or float test to see whether the pumpkins bob on the surface or sink to the bottom of the water. Once you’ve carved them and gotten the seeds out, mix baking soda and water for a pumpkin volcano. Pumpkin science experiments are all about curiosity, testing hypotheses and getting a little messy!

2. Spooky Stories

Ghouls, goblins, ghosts, haunted houses—these are all the makings of a spooky, Halloween story. Encourage your child to brainstorm a spooky story with a surprising twist. Have them write it out, illustrate it or act it out. Let their imagination run wild! Their story can be as scary or as silly as they like. This activity nurtures their creativity and challenges them to use unique vocabulary. It also makes for some fun memories, especially when told in a dark room with a flashlight or around a campfire.

3. Candy Math Challenges

Before tearing into the candy they got while trick-or-treating, challenge your child to guess how much they collected. This can be by weight or by number. Have them sort their candy by type, color or size, then create a graph or visual of the results. They can also practice addition and subtraction. If they eat a certain number of candies, how many will they have left? If five of their friends give them two pieces of candy each, how much will they have? These candy math challenges combine snack time with learning, and that always keeps kids engaged!

4. DIY Halloween Costumes & Crafts

Halloween is the perfect time to get creative and hands-on. Invite your child to design and decorate their own costume, or to create Halloween-themed crafts. Use cardboard, fabric, construction paper, paint, googly eyes and glitter. These hands-on activities involve creativity, measuring, problem-solving and fine motor skills. Whether they’re creating a friendly ghost from a paper plate or putting together a robot costume from cardboard boxes, they’re learning something while having fun.

5. Learning About Bats and Spiders

Bats and spiders are classic Halloween creatures. While they may seem spooky, both are actually very important for the ecosystem. Encourage your child to learn about them by reading nonfiction books or watching nature videos. They may be fascinated by what they learn about bats’ echolocation or spiders’ silk. Have them demonstrate what they learned by creating a project, like a poster board or a 3D model. Take a walk outside to see if you can spot spider webs or bats flying overhead.

Halloween is a great time to blend learning with fun. With these activities you can do right at home, your child will be in the Halloween spirit while learning something new and practicing skills. At Lake Forrest Prep, we’re always encouraging our students to let their curiosity lead them and find opportunities to learn in everyday moments.
