Tips for Helping Your Child Become More Eco-Conscious

Raising an eco-conscious child doesn’t mean you have to live a completely off-the-grid lifestyle. It simply means that you need to teach them the importance of taking care of the planet while implementing a few simple practices. Kids are usually naturally curious about the world around them, and that curiosity is the perfect place for a conversation to start. What they talk about and the habits they build now have a real chance of sticking with them well into adulthood with the right encouragement. Here are some tips for helping your child become more eco-conscious:

Tackling Food Waste

One of the easiest places to start is with something we encounter every day: food. First, have a conversation about food waste, explaining what it looks like and the impacts. Then introduce solutions, like meal planning, eating all of the leftovers and using as much of an ingredient as possible. For example, vegetable rinds are perfect for making soup broth, while overripe fruit can be great for baking or making smoothies. This is also a good opportunity to talk about single-use food packaging and why using less of it, by choosing fewer individually wrapped snacks or food products, for example, can make a big difference.

If you have enough room in your yard, try starting a small herb or vegetable garden. This helps children better understand and appreciate where food comes from. This is also an excellent opportunity to use those food scraps and eggshells as compost.

Conserving Water

Another easy, everyday win for your child is water conservation. Challenge them to keep their showers short, turn off the water while brushing their teeth and be mindful about running water while doing the dishes. If your child is extra dedicated, they can turn off the faucet while they lather their hands with soap when washing their hands. There are so many ways for kids to conserve water, and making it fun by turning it into a friendly family competition brings about a little extra motivation!

Saving Energy

Like eating food and running water, we also use energy in our everyday routines, which means it offers another opportunity for your child to easily practice more eco-conscious habits. Flipping the lights off when they leave a room, shutting off electronics and unplugging chargers they’re not using are great ways to start saving energy. You can tie it back to water conservation and challenge them to use less hot water, as it doubles as a win for both saving water and conserving energy.

Reusing and Recycling

Most kids learn “reduce, reuse, and recycle” pretty early on, and taking it a step further can really make it stick. Give them a quick crash course on landfills and the importance of reusing and recycling. Teach them about what can and can’t be recycled, as well as how to recycle properly, such as rinsing containers and removing labels before placing them in the recycling bin. And while you’re at it, encourage them to pick up litter they see outside and dispose of it properly.

When it comes to reusing, this is where your child’s creativity can come into play. Cardboard boxes become structures for forts or boards for DIY board games, while glass jars become pencil holders or terrariums. This reinforces a mindset of “how else could this be used?”

Shopping Secondhand

Speaking of reusing, shopping secondhand is big among today’s generation. Thrifting has had quite the glow-up, and vintage and nostalgia are everything right now. Shopping secondhand fits right into that trend while also encouraging eco-friendly habits. Since you never know what you’re going to find in a thrift shop, frame it as a treasure hunt for your child. Make it fun for them to score unique clothing pieces, books, decorations for their room or toys. They can even find fun gifts for their friends, which is especially impactful because it means inspiring others around them to be more eco-conscious. Talk about a ripple effect!

When encouraging your child to be more eco-conscious, remember that perfection isn’t the goal. The goal is awareness, and implementing just one or two simple habits is a great way to start.
