Summer break may feel like a new life for children, with a different pace, new routines and plenty of fun. Help your child make the most of it! Here are five goals to set this summer that will keep them engaged, active and inspired throughout the break:
1. Explore a New Culture
Learning about different cultures doesn’t require a long journey. While travel is a great opportunity, it’s not the only way to broaden your family’s horizons. There are plenty of ways to explore a new culture right from home! Spin a globe or lay out a map, and let your child choose a country that catches their eye. Learn about its location, traditions and everyday life. Try a new recipe, practice a few words in the native language or listen to traditional music. Exploring new cultures is always tons of fun!
2. Try a New Sport
Use these summer weeks to encourage your child to try a sport they’ve never played before. Whether it’s a classic like tennis or something more unexpected, like bocce ball, the goal is to have fun while staying active. Other exciting options may include flying on a trapeze, trying indoor skydiving, or even indoor skiing. These activities are great for adding an extra adventure to your summer break. You may even turn it into a family activity or find a new hobby your child would enjoy long after summer ends.
3. Turn Weakness into Strength
If your child struggled with a subject during the school year, summer is a great time to turn things around. Start by identifying those weak spots, then dedicate time during summer break to focus on improving. Set a goal to study a little each day, whether it’s through fun workbooks, online games or simple daily practice. Choose a measurable goal to motivate your child, like reading a certain number of words per minute or solving a set number of math problems within a specific time frame. Don’t forget to discuss a reward when your child reaches those goals. With consistency and encouragement, those challenges can become areas of confidence.
4. Set a Reading Goal
Establishing a reading goal is a great way to keep your child’s development on track while adding structure to the summer days. You can even turn it into a family goal! For example, choose a book that everyone will read together each day. This way, you’ll accomplish your reading goal and enjoy quality time together as a family. It’s a wonderful opportunity to bond and work as a team!
5. Write About Each Day of Summer
Finally, make sure to capture the special moments of your summer break. One great way to do this is by keeping a journal—but there are other creative options, too! For instance, start a memory jar. Each day, have family members write down a secret note about something they enjoyed or found memorable, and add it to the jar. At the end of the summer, you can gather as a family to read the notes and reflect on the wonderful moments you shared. For younger children, drawing pictures of their favorite moments can be a fun alternative, while older children can practice writing every day. It’s a beautiful way to reflect on the summer fun together.
