6 Tips on Effectively Talking to Your Child’s Teacher

Being able to effectively communicate with your child’s teacher is an important part of the success of his or her education. Keeping open lines of communication with your child and their teacher will help him or her, not only become a better student, but it will also assist with your understanding of the role that you play in your child’s education. As an Orlando private school, we encourage all of our parents to participate in their child’s day-to-day education, and keep open the lines of communication with teachers. We have developed 6 tips for effectively talking with your child’s teacher.

  • Information – At the beginning of each school year, provide your child’s teacher with information about your child that will help him or her get to know him, especially if you know that he or she struggles with a particular subject or has problems listening. This will help the teacher adapt to your child’s learning style.
  • Homework – Discuss with the teacher his or her expectations on homework. Discuss the suggestions and recommendations if your child struggles to get homework done and how additional in-class assistance may be provided.
  • Contact – Find out the best way that your child’s teacher likes to be contacted. If he or she is easier to talk with via telephone then shooting over an email about your child’s progress might not be the best method for communication. This will ensure that he or she is answering your questions in a timely manner.
  • Partner – Partner with your child on homework and school work so that he or she sees that you are interested. If you show your child that you also ask the teacher questions and are curious as well, he or she will be comfortable communicating with the teacher.
  • Volunteer – Volunteering in the classroom will help you gain an understanding of the day-to-day structure that your child experiences.
  • Thank you – Write your child’s teacher thank you notes when things go well. This will show that you appreciate the time and effort he or she puts into your child’s education.
